Sonic the Hedgehog Movie speeds into theaters February 14th….just in time for Valentine’s Day! It’s a family-friendly film that’s nostalgic for fans who grew up playing the popular video game. Making it the perfect feel good movie for the whole family to watch together.
Last month my family watched an early screening and attended the press junket – it was a lot of fun! Scroll down.
Synopsis
Based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG tells the story of the world’s speediest hedgehog as he embraces his new home on Earth. In this live-action adventure comedy, Sonic and his new best friend Tom (James Marsden) team up to defend the planet from the evil genius Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) and his plans for world domination. The family-friendly film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
Sonic The Hedgehog Press Junket
It’s always a fun experience for me whenever I can take my junior reporter, Caiden to these press junkets. Especially since he’s a Gamer and loves Sonic the Hedgehog! Here he is asking the cast, “What do you want kids to learn from this movie?”
The press junket was full of laughs. I mean, hello…JIM CARREY! He had the best time playing Dr. Robotnik and it translates onto the big screen.
During the conference we learned that Ben Schwartz voice for Sonic was used as a test for producers to sell the movie idea to studios BUT because they loved his voice, he stayed on! And I have to say, he’s a great Sonic!

Sonic The Hedgehog Movie Review
Okay, I’m gonna be honest. When I first heard about this movie coming out, I cringed at the idea of it. AND I cringed even more when my boys got super excited when they saw the first movie poster. Look, I’m an 80’s/90’s child who grew up playing the game – so I had high expectations from the beginning. And when I saw that teaser trailer with those teeth…yeah I had no intention to watch it. Thank goodness they listened and made those crucial changes!
Now when I watch a movie that’s geared towards families…I just want us all to be entertained, have fun, and learn a valuable lesson. Sonic the Hedgehog Movie was all that and more! So yeah, I loved it as much as my kids did. It was also nostalgic, especially seeing Jim Carrey doing his thing.
Now if you’re worried about your littles ones watching the film, Ronan is 4 years old and loved it. But he doesn’t get scared with movies like this (full of action, bad guys vs. good guys) because he already knew everything about Sonic, thanks to his big brother. So it really depends on your child.
Stay till the end for a post-ending scene!
Will you be watching? Would love to know your thoughts about the movie?
