Solo: A Star Wars Story is now playing in theaters everywhere. But earlier this week, I sent the biggest Star Wars fan I know (my husband, Danny) to a special early screening. When it comes to Star Wars films, my DH has to watch it without us – the first time around! No joke. He says he has to watch “his” movie with no distractions. And I can’t blame him, because Caiden will ask him a ton of questions while the movie is playing.
So if you’re wondering if the film is kid-friendly, scroll below to ready Danny’s review. Note that he originally had FOUR pages that went deep into the Star Wars Universe…but don’t worry, I made him cut it down to give you a “Dad Review” with kids in mind.

Solo: A Star Wars Story, DAD REVIEW
Thanks to my much better half, I just had the chance to screen the origin story of one of my favorite star wars icons – Han Solo. As I consider myself an Uber fan of the Star Wars universe and have watched every movie, animated series, and other media that could be considered canon, I was very excited to see Ron Howards take on Han. Although there have been very mixed reviews on the film, I have to say that I really enjoyed it.
Watching a new Star Wars film used to be something that was very rare and exclusive, however, in the very recent past, we have been flooded with new films, cartoons, books, and video games. It’s to the point that I either needed a new take on the Star Wars Universe, or a film so unbelievably amazing, it would rock my world. Solo definitely delivered in the fact that we are shown a completely new side of the Star Wars world which we really haven’t fully explored in the past.
We are used to the same themes of good vs. evil represented with a green or red lightsaber. The beauty with Solo is that there isn’t a clear representation of who is the bad guy, and who is the good guy. The film takes us into a world where the good guys really aren’t that good.
Solo shows us what it takes for a poor boy to grow up in a galaxy run by the Empire. In Han’s world, the scary people don’t shoot lightning from their fingers, but rather are the mob bosses who control the underworld.
The film is kid friendly, but with a small red flag. You will probably have to explain why the good guy is double crossing his partners while excitedly living a life of crime. Han does make the right moral choices in the end, but his path isn’t always straight.
All in all, this was a fun and entertaining popcorn movie with some amazing Easter eggs for the Star Wars fan, and great visuals for the family.
